Happy Easter!!

Well it’s been a few weeks so I thought it is time for a quick update.  For the first couple of weeks after I came to Canada I just took it easy and didn’t do a whole lot while I caught up with myself.  I’m still suffering from acute sticker shock at the supermarket, the gas station and with the cell phone costs among other things.  I continue spending time with (spoiling rotten) my 1½ year old great-niece and 4 year old great-nephew and reconnecting with family and friends.  I have also been getting some personal things caught up as well as jumping back into church activities.  Recently I helped a friend with a senior’s luncheon at Full Gospel Church where I got to meet some great folks and to see some who I haven’t seen in a long time.  Last weekend I went to the Jesus to the Nations missions conference where I got to hear of many great things going on around the world.  http://www.jesustothenations.com/home/  

I am so excited that my church is sending a team to Kyrgyzstan in September and will be helping them out wherever I can.   It’s going to be a great trip.  I am also making my plans to return to Ukraine the first week of June, as well as to Kyrgyzstan in September.  That’s basically the nutshell version of my activities up to now.  If anyone in the Halifax area is interested I am still available to come visit your church, your club or community group, or to come have coffee to share my experiences of “life on the road.”

I’m also looking for fund raising opportunities.  My computer is running (thanks Mo) but is about to go again at any moment so I need to get a new and trustworthy one with an up to date Office program (I’m still using Word 2002) before I go back.  I also want to get some things like craft supplies as well as raise funds so that I can sponsor some activities and needs when I get there.

I’m Baa-aack!! (For now)

Well the last 2 weeks I have kept pretty busy with the packing and preparations to come to Canada and then the traveling.  And then 2 weeks ago my computer died again, this time for good.  I was fortunate at the time to have a house guest who does computer work who confirmed that the hard drive died.  Since the disk drive died 2 years ago and the battery is down to 5 minutes at full charge I guess it’s time to find a bullet to bite and get a new machine…sigh.  At least for March I can use Dad’s computer while he’s away. 

So other than house guests and packing I was able to get to Boorie Ooglie for another visit.  I was glad to see that the renovations are done in the room and that the men are now out of that cramped stairwell that I mentioned in a previous blog.  I tagged along with Igor L. and Pastor Elena (I think that’s her name) and some others and we did a worship time with the men…and of course I had my candy bag with me.

Then this past Monday I took the night train to Kyiv so that I could get my flight on Tuesday morning.  A lot of people grumble about the trains in Ukraine, whether they are too old and slow or too hot or cold or whatever.  I think I’ve inherited my mother’s love for trains as I find it’s a nice way to travel.  I usually don’t like tea but for some reason it tastes so good on the train and the tickets are so cheap.  I have also been able to meet some amazing people, many of whom can speak English and want to practice it.

So I got to the airport and had a tense moment when the customs guards were looking at my passport and discussing it for what seemed an eternity.  I was beginning to think I might have another incident like in Kyrgyzstan but he stamped my passport and away I went…whew!  The flights went very smoothly with no problems at all.  All of the connections were made and no luggage was lost.  I had to connect in Amsterdam and I was getting pretty hungry when I got there and hoped to pick something up at the airport after finding my gate.  I only had 2 hours there most of which was spent literally running from one end of the airport to the other to the next gate, just in time for boarding call.  Who knew – one of the smallest nations in the world would have one of the largest airports...and the most security.  However, KLM made up for it by constantly…and I mean CONSTANTLY feeding us.  They even went up the aisles giving out ice cream at one point.  I’ve never seen that on a plane before.

 So since Tuesday night I’ve been in Hammonds Plains catching up on personal things and playing (okay then…spoiling rotten) my 1 ½ year old great niece and her 4 year old brother as well as trying to come up with an activity plan while I’m in Canada.  If anyone would like me to come visit your church, your club, your house with your friends, or even go for a coffee I would be happy to come share my experiences of “life on the road.”  I go back to Ukraine in June so I have lots of time to do things.
